S1 pupils from Dalry School got a fantastic response from Wilkinson’s store in Castle Douglas when they asked for local shops to support their Operation Christmas Child shoebox appeal.
First Year pupil Hannah Daly wrote to several stores within 25 miles of Dalry. Wilkinson’s responded by sending 4 trolleyloads of goodies! Pens, paints, craft materials and pencil cases were added to what pupils had already collected.
Pictured above with S1 pupils, Assistant Manager Peter Butterworth and staff Wendy Makin and Carol Jardine also brought £30 that Wilkinson’s staff had collected. Mr Bannister of Dalry School said “They gave us so many things we will be able to do so much more than we had hoped to. We need more shoe boxes!”
So far, 30 finished boxes will be sent to children in Africa, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. Castle Douglas Tesco also contributed a £10 voucher to spend in their store on goods for the appeal.

The Wigtown Book Festival 2009 |
|
The Wigtown Book Festival is a book festival where schools from across Dumfries and Galloway come together to hear writers talk about their books and then get to do a bit of writing as well. We had talks and workshops from writers including Maggi Gibson, Julian Coulton, Alan Durant and a cartoon writing team named Metaphrog.
The writers shared ideas about how they became writers and then they read excerpts from some of their books to the audience. There was also a PowerPoint shown of a cartoon character which Metaphrog had produced. Then we had some lunch.

MAESTRO MUSIC - RSNO - GLASGOW ROYAL CONCERT HALL
WHAT WE THOUGHT….
• My favourite piece was Apres Midi d’un Faune
• DAVE is the best bus driver EVER!!
By Adam
• I remember that the orchestral music ranged from loud and daring to quiet and romantic.
• There was strange percussion – roasting tins - in Thomas Ades.
• I can honestly say it was different from what I thought it was going to be.
By Ryan
• The Vivaldi Bassoon Concerto was my favourite piece - I liked how there were different themes - A-B-A-C-A-D-A and a CODA at the end.

Devil's Porridge Trip 2009 |
|
On Thursday 28 May 2009 the 4M History group took a trip to the The Devil’s Porridge in Eastriggs. The day started off at 9.00 am, where we made our way to Dumfries. At Dumfries we looked at the War Memorial. We researched names that we found on the memorial. One name that we had been following on that day was a woman called Roberta Robertson. She was the only woman that had been put on a War Memorial in Dumfriesshire and she worked in the factory in Eastriggs.
Next, we made our journey to the Devil’s Porridge. We were greeted when we got there and given a little introduction to the site. The factory stretched 9 miles by 2 miles. There were remains of a train track where the workers would get on to go to work. Although the museum was small on the outside, it had a lot of information on the inside. What it lacked in size, it made up for in quality. Unlike most museums, you could touch the articles, rather than just look at them which made it unique.
I enjoyed visiting The Devil’s Porridge as it was different, but I think that you will be surprised by the size, which may be a disappointment to some. Overall, this is a very good experience, and you can learn quite a lot.
